Tourism for Inclusive Growth’ is the theme for World Tourism Day 2021. This year’s official celebration will be hosted by Cote d’Ivoire, celebrating tourism’s ability to drive inclusive development and the role it plays in promoting respect while generating opportunities for many millions across the globe.
World Tourism Day: The theme of World Tourism Day this year is "Tourism and Rural Development". It encourages the celebration of the unique role played by tourism in job creation in small towns and rural areas. World Tourism Day 2020: Livelihood of millions of people globally are dependent on tourism.
The theme of World Tourism Day 2019 is ‘Tourism and Jobs: a better future for all’. This year's theme focuses on generating more and better jobs, especially for youth and women. To generated opportunity for work is The theme of World Tourism Day 2018 is “Tourism and Cultural Protection” and for 2017 was “Sustainable Tourism – a tool for development”.
Tourism has an instrumental role in promoting cultural knowledge and awareness, offering the necessary tools and public opinion support in protecting world heritage. The main role of World Tourism Day is to highlight the global significance of tourism as a tool for global development and cultural enlightenment. According to the European Council on Tourism and Trade, Tourism is the greatest educator in the world.also mentioned in the Sustainable Development Goal 8. New policies should be generated to reflect and incorporate ongoing advances in technology. The program will be held in the India's capital city Delhi to draw attention towards the challenges outlined in the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations and how tourism industry can help meet these challenges.
According to the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), digital advances and innovation are a part of the solution to the challenge of fulfilling the continued growth with more sustainable and responsible tourism sector.

World Tourism Day: History
A special assembly was held in Mexico City on 27 September, 1970 by the International Union of Official Travel Organisation (IUOTO) and adopted the Statues of World Tourism Organisation. Then, UNWTO decided in late September 1979 to institute World Tourism Day. First time it was celebrated on 27 September, 1980.
Do you know why 27 September is chosen for World Tourism Day because this date coincided with an important milestone in world tourism i.e. the anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes on 27 September, 1970? Also, according to the UNWTO, the date is appropriate for World Tourism Day because it comes at the end of the high tourist season in the northern hemisphere and the start of the tourist season in the southern hemisphere. With different theme every year this day is celebrated with full enthusiasm.
World Tourism Day: Significance
The main purpose of celebrating World Tourism Day is to raise the importance of tourism worldwide and to show the general public how tourism affects not only the economic values of a country or region but also it affects the social, political and cultural values of the country or region.
In the October session of World Tourism Day, 1997 at Istanbul, Turkey, the United Nation's World Trade Organisations General Assembly decided to designate a host country every year to act as a partner during the celebration of World Tourism Day.
Celebrations of World Tourism Day 2019 is in Delhi, India. India is hosting World Tourism Day for the first time because of its geographical features. India is famous for its diversity. So, it can offer tourists various cuisines, adventurous places, history, music forms, languages etc. UNWTO stressed the importance of tourism and technology providing opportunities for innovation and creating the jobs of the future. Our Heritage and Culture can be protected by ensuring that during exhibitions, people should be taught about the importance of our Heritage for current and for the future generations. It is important to protect flora and fauna.
World Tourism Day is celebrated in a number of different ways. On this day amusement parks, museums and other cultural venues give free entry or reduce the charges of entry tickets to attract tourist and foster tourism.
At the end, we can’t ignore the fact that tourism has become the continuously growing and developing economic sectors worldwide because of the occurrence of various attractive and new destinations for the tourists. So, now it has become the main source of income for the developing countries.
Some interesting facts about World Tourism Day
1. The World Tourism Day was first observed on September 27, 1980. The United Nations chose this date as on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted.
2. The tourism sector has seen an impressive worldwide expansion following the recognition of the right to holidays in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
3. Tourism sector represents an estimated 10 per cent of the world’s GDP and 1 in 10 jobs globally.
4. International tourist arrivals worldwide have grown from 25 million in 1950 to nearly 1.2 billion in 2015.
5. International tourism revenues earned by destinations around the world have grown from $2 billion in 1950 to $1260 trillion in 2015.
6. Tourism, according to estimates, will continue to grow at an average of 3.3 per cent annually until 2030.
7. The UN General Assembly proclaimed 2017 the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development
8. Hence, in 2017, the celebration focuses on how sustainable tourism can contribute to development.
9. ‘Sustaniable Tousrism – a Tool for Development’ celebration is being held in Doha, Qatar.
10. UN: This year provides a unique opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to sustainability and move forward to ensure the positive impact of well-managed tourism on inclusive and equitable growth, sustainable development and peace.
